Who is Maureen McDonnell?

Maureen McDonnell has been a holistic RN using nutritional methods for 42 years. She started her nursing career in the Labor and Delivery department of an inner-city hospital. It didn’t take long for her to realize that the western medical model lacked an understanding and respect for the natural process of labor and birth and (although necessary in a small percentage of women) was far too quick to intercede with unnecessary medical and pharmaceutical procedures and interventions. As a result of this experience and her studies of natural birth and healing as well as her awakening regarding the role nutrition plays in a healthy pregnancy and birth, Maureen became a certified childbirth instructor.

In 1991 Maureen became the Director of Patient Education at the Princeton Brain Bio Center in Skillman, NJ where she assisted Sidney M. Baker, MD (cofounder of the Defeat Autism Now! Movement) in providing nutritional treatments and health education services for a chronically-ill population including many children with autism.

In 1993 after the Princeton Brain Bio Center closed, Maureen and Dr. Sidney Baker, MD began working together in private practice in Hopewell, NJ where she interacted with hundreds of parents of children with autism and witnessed firsthand their day to day struggles. As the country’s premier provider of biomedical treatments for autism , Dr. Baker offered assessments and interventions while Maureen counseled parents on diet as well as ways to lessen their & their children’s exposure to toxins. Also during this time, Maureen began speaking at various conferences on the role nutrition and environmental toxins play in autism and other children’s health conditions.

In 1998, Dr. Bernard Rimland PhD became aware of Maureen’s seminars and invited her to become the national coordinator of the Defeat Autism Now! Conferences. For the next 10 years, Maureen organized these events that targeted parents, physicians and researchers which took place biannually and bi-coastally and drew 1000s of attendees from around the world.

In 2008 after leaving her role as the conference coordinator, Maureen cofounded the Saving Our Kids, Healing Our Planet conferences and website ( and in 2011 Maureen was asked by Deirdre and Don Imus to become the Medical Coordinator of the Imus Ranch for Kids with Cancer in New Mexico which she continued until the ranch closed in 2014. In 2011 she also became the Health Editor of WNC Woman’s Magazine. She has published over 70 articles focused on women and children’s health issues in this and other magazines including Pathways, Natural Awakenings and the Autism File.

Maureen also owns the vitamin supplement company owner of Nutritionist’s Choice, Inc. and is a principle of Millions Against Medical Mandates (,) She has also been a guest speaker on radio and TV- including (Imus in the Morning.) and lives with her husband in the mountains of western North Carolina and she has 11 grandchildren.

Anger Management

Why do I continue to get angry, and why do I always feel so justified in my anger even though it always makes me feel terrible at a later time?

GF: To be angry is to suffer. It doesn't help anyone to get angry. Anger hurts whoever is angry. It burns. Anger ruins relationships, causes heartache and regret, and devastates health. And yet, in spite of all of these facts, when we are angry, it feels right. Somehow, in some unseen way, anger proves to whoever is experiencing its heated feelings that he or she is right even though, in the eyes of reality, nothing could be further from the truth. Anger feels like it is in your best interest because, at the time of its intrusion into your life, it temporarily fills you with a powerful false sense of self. However, this anger can only exist without your conscious consent or awareness of its being there. So it is good that you are wondering how you can be tricked into feeling bad about anything. The Truth wants you to know that it is never in your best interest to suffer, no matter how inwardly convincing it may feel to you that you will be betraying yourself if you don't. Anger hypnotizes you with a flood of itself. Step back and learn instead to listen to the quiet stream of higher insight that runs softly through your true nature. Let it show you that your anger and suffering proves nothing.

Is it important to defend yourself with an angry person, or at least point out to him how poorly he is behaving?

GF: When someone is angry with you, your own awakened insight shows you he isn't really angry at you, but only with his fixed idea about you. Something unexpected in your behavior has upset his mental picture of you - and its wavering shape is making him feel like he's losing control. So he reasons wrongly it's you on the attack - and the only choice left for him is to return the attack. And his conviction you're to blame is confirmed with his every strike, for the pain he gives is the pain he then gets - since all he really rages against is an image within his own mind which is where each of his blows finds its mark. So what need is there to punish those who would punish us? They have already been thoroughly self-punished.

When I look at myself, it seems that my most prevalent emotion is anger. It's always there, and I feel powerless to stop my raging thoughts. What can I do? I really am weary of my own out-of-control emotions.

GF: You already know that your anger is destroying you. It is... and it will. The fact that you are tired of losing your life to these self-harming psychic states means you are ready for a change. Here is a new way to work with what's been working you over: The next time some hostile state takes you over, either in thought - as in remembering something someone did to you in the past - or in an actual moment of conflict with someone standing before you, take the following inner steps as soon as you can remember yourself to do so: Start by seeing that something foreign to your True Nature has imposed itself on you, taken over your life. Once having done this, do nothing else except realize that while you may be temporarily powerless to stop the lower state from possessing you, you are empowered to recognize the negative state as the intruder that it is. This conscious awareness of your true pained condition, is what it means to put the Light on the problem. That's your job. The Light will do its part if you'll do yours. Persist until you are free!

Different Kinds of Magnesium

Magnesium is a vital to energy production enzyme activity. It helps uptake of potassium, calcium and Vitamin D3. Supplementing with magnesium has bee shown to aid and help prevent depression, muscle weakness, dizziness, muscle twitching, PMS, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis an more. Magnesium helps ph balace and normalize body temperature and cholesterol levels. It protects the arterial linings and helps form bone.

Magnesium deficiency may help cause confusion, insomnia, poor digestion, rapid heartbeat, seizures and tantrums. Alcohol consumption, using diuretics, having diarrhea, consumption of fluoride in water, and taking high levels of D and Zincincrease the body's need for magnesium.

If you eat a large amount of fats and foods high in oxalic acid like almonds, swiss chard, cocoa, spinach, tea and rhubarb hinder the absorption of magnesium. Here are some different kinds of magnesium and a simplistic explanation of what they do. Do more research on your own or consult you natural health care provider for more information.

The Different Types of Magnesium

1. Magnesium chloride
Extracted from salt water/ocean water it helps sleep, bone health, digestion and a sense of calm (both mental and physical). Side effects: It may cause diarrhea.

2. Magnesium citrate
Is a magnesium Salt derived from citric acid helps digestion, acid indigestion and constipation. It is the most recommended by health professionals. Side Effects: Since it pulls water out of the intestines it may cause dehydration.

3. Magnesium Glycinate
Naturally supports muscle relaxation and has a calming effect on the mind without the laxative effects.

4. Magnesium L-threonate
Improves cognitive functions, especially short term memory loss caused by chronic pain and it may help prevent dementia and sharpen your ability and wit.

5. Magnesium Malate
A combination Magnesium and Malic Acid it supports muscle function, cardiovascular health and energy production.

6. Magnesium orotate
A combination of magnesium and orotic acid it supports heart health, repairs tissue and helps stamina and performance.

7. Magnesium oxide
is found in Milk of Magnesia and helps improve digestion.

8. Magnesium sulfate
Other wise known as Epsom Salts helps sore muscles and is has laxative effects.

Recipe of the Month

Abstract Applesauce Cake

Oven Temperature: 350° F
Baking Time: 45-50 min., 8" square pan
Preparation: Grease baking pans.

2 cups flour blend (page )
1 1/2 teaspoons of xantham gum
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon cardamom
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 cup butter (room temperature)
3/4 cup maple syrup
2 eggs, well beaten (room temperature)
1 cup applesauce
1 teaspoon vanilla
Optional: Add 3/4 cups dates or
1 cup raisins or 1 cup chopped nuts.

Sift together flour blend, xantham gum, baking soda, salt and spices.
Cream butter with maple syrup using electric mixer on low-medium speed until well blended. Add eggs.
Using an electric mixer at medium speed alternately add flour mix and applesauce to creamed butter-maple syrup mixture, blend until smooth after each addition. Add vanilla and optional, dates, raisins or chopped nuts.
Pour batter into greased pans and bake at 350° F. Bake 45-50 min. for 8" or 9" square pans or until inserted wooden toothpick comes out clean from center of cake. Cool in cake pans 5-10 min. Then remove and completely cool on wire rack then frost with your favorite frosting or eat it plain!
